Clarice 2 is the new jewellery collection by Sydney based designer Joao Vaz, and the sequel to his previous collection Clarice.
Inspired by a continuation in the main character’s journey, Clarice 2 takes us outside of her comfort zone. After living in a one bedroom flat for all her life, Clarice decides it’s finally time to come out and give the outside world a chance.
Uncertain of what she might find, preparation and caution are essential. She assembles a new wardrobe of plastic clothes, because who knows what the outside world is accustomed to? And pulls her hair back, ready for battle.
All the jewellery pieces are made from two main materials: black acrylic combined with white, pink and yellow cubic zirconias. The stones are set using only the pressure created by the acrylic.
The cinematic inspiration can be felt throughout the collection, from the striking black and white contrast, referencing 30’s and 40s’s Hollywood glamour, to the extravagant use of stones, no more so than in Orry’s Bracelet, celebrating characters such as 1958’s Auntie Mame and a direct homage to Australian Hollywood costume designer Orry Kelly.
All of the acrylic pieces are laser cut in St Peters, Sydney by Model Craft.
The acrylic, which is 100% recyclable and also known as Lucite or perspex, is sourced from the Sydney based laser cutting company Model Craft. The company uses acrylic from different countries, mainly Germany, Indonesia and China.
Cubic zirconias are the cubic crystalline form of zirconium dioxide ZrO2. First introduced in the jewellery industry in 1976, they are a hard stone (8.5 Mohs scale, diamonds are 10 in the scale) of perfect clarity and exceptional brightness.
The princess and cushion cut cubic zirconias are manufactured by Fu Rong Gems in the province of GuangXi, China; the round cut cubic zirconias are manufactured in Switzerland.
I’m in eternal debt to Jenna for modelling in the most energetic and committed fashion. Your beauty will forever outlive this jewellery collection. Eleanor, who photographs with her heart as much as with her talent, brings to life images that emancipate my jewellery. Working with you is a constant source of pleasure and inspiration. To Heleena and Catherine words fall short of expressing my gratitude for your effort and energy, my work, this shoot and look book owe you a great deal. Thank you Hannah for helping elevate the quality of this shoot and magnifying Jenna’s classical beauty.
