+ Also, as part of Sydney Design, Joao Vaz will be taking part in the project See Saw-A collection of short stories, as one of the 25 students participating. The event takes place between July 27 and August 7 at Gaffa gallery.

Five groups of five student designers focus on different aspects of design-colour, balance, typography and semantics, unity and hierarchy, working collaboratively with a professional mentor. The public is invited to watch the project evolve gradually in Gaffa's exhibition space.

+ Tonight is the opening night of 32 Dead For Jewellery-Origin, an exhibition by Joao Vaz curated by Zoe Brand at Keeper gallery, Gaffa in Sydney. The exhibition gives video and photographic incite on the creation, development and destruction of the 3D model of the two mountains and collapsed bridge, part of the project's story. It also showcases the first six brooches done for the project and their photographic studies.

32 Dead For Jewellery-Origin runs until July 13th.

+ "Like concrete clashing concrete, so did the bus and the people on it collide the water of the river below. Like a stone being thrown into a lake the bus disappeared in the freezing unforgiving water. And quickly, just the same way as the bus had, the screams vanished! 32 had died."

Joao Vaz

The result to the invitation by curator Zoe Brand to take part in the exhibition Precious Material saw the continuation of the long developed projected 32 Dead For Jewellery. All the work exhibited at GAFFA is now online.

+ " It is important to me to create a body of work that speaks to women, not in an imposing way, but honest and generous way. The production line will be comfortable and considerate of the wearer, both physically and practically. I want to create jewellery, which is elegant and beautiful."

+ " The exhibition neckpiece graciously transforms itself into a production line by caring forward what matters the most. For production I will be creating a set of rings and earrings, which will embody the same visual language and texture. Both the rings and the earrings will in most cases be formed of only one material, silver. This will ultimately reflect on the idea that everything is made of the same substance."

+ The main project for the rest of this year has now a name, it is called Many-Petalled.

" My exhibition neckpiece will represent this non-singular unity with what is around us. The main body will be made of metal and shape purposefully around the neck. The structure although repetitive and almost entirely composed of the same elementary form will demand dexterity, patience and dedication to be made. The hinges will be precise and accurate."

+ The Opening of Precious Material was a success. The exhibition will continue until the 6th of April. The work currently on show will then have it's premier here at joaovaz.net.

Precious Material has in total 7 pieces by Joao Vaz, 1 cushion and 6 brooches. All of the work was completely hand made. All the pieces are based on the same concept, a pillow like base with an embroidered face on top. The bigger brooches and cushion have a relief of a face and the smaller brooches a single line drawing of a face.

All pieces have been individually embroidered on the back with the jeweller's name.

Entry - 14/03/10 - 32DFJ + The Waves

+ Teased has been an exciting and fascinating experience! Now that the project draws to an end, lots of other equally exciting events will take place... The first group of pieces from 32 Dead For Jewellery will be showcased at GAFFA gallery in Sydney as part of a group exhibition. Closer to the opening day more information will be released on what work will feature in the exhibition.

The Waves - Original book cover+ 2010 is at this stage well on it's way! We can now provide some details on what work is being produced for the final year of Jewellery and Object Design. For the major subject, where each student is required to choose a book to base the year's work on, Joao Vaz decided upon Virginia Woolf's The Waves.

The work produced for this subject will be both exhibition, as well as, production pieces. Regular updates and occasional glimpses into what is being accomplished through out the year is a definite certainty.

"I sing like the nightingale whose melody is crowded in the too narrow passage of her throat."

+ January could not possibly end better than with the launch of 32DFJ-Teased visual diary. Manufacture is under way and we have the first two photographic studies of the work in progress for 32 Dead For Jewellery project.

32DFJ-Teased is the visual interpretation of the working process undertaken from beginning until completion of each piece. However, instead of showing the actual work, it offers an old good tease on what's to come.

+ Excitement never ends at joaovaz.net! We can exclusively reveal that some of the pieces composing 32 Dead For Jewellery are being made as we write. Even more exciting will be the upcoming photos of what to expect! The final work will have its debut around March! Further details are to be expected in February.

+ The 3rd year at TAFE Design Centre Enmore is also about to start. The final year of Jewellery and Object Design holds a year of amazing potential and expectation.

For an entire year, Joao Vaz will be focussing on the creation of exhibition and production work, which will then be showcased at the department's End of Year Exhibition. Nothing is certain in the land of jewellery but we are told the next 12 months should be filled with great things!

+ The second week of photos proved to be as exciting as the first week. This time around all the work was photographed using available light in three different backgrounds: grey, black and white. We are hoping to get a preview early next week, for now, some more wonderful photos of Catherine Buman wearing Silvia's choker. All jewellery by Joao Vaz.

Entry - 20/10/09 - On Death, update

+ On Death is in its final week! The hand gloves are the unfinished remaining piece. If everything works as planned, raw photos of all three pieces will be available for inspection very soon!

+ Next week holds wonderful possibilities... The work produced so far will start being photographed in the school's studio, in what we expect to be a rather sexy arrangement, and we might get the chance to look at the first shots early next week. The photo shoot will continue throughout the next 4 weeks.

+ The next project is already on its way. On Life, an obvious reaction to the emotional predicaments of the previous project will see the construction of 5 brooches that reinvent 2 particular elements of On Death, the Tree Heart and Death.

This time around happiness and gayness is the absolute must. The proposal, being produced as we write, will be as flamboyant and sparkly as they get. Informative photos are also expected next week!

Entry - 04/10/09 - On Death, continuation

+ On Death - Concept Rational:

I’ll be producing 3 pieces:

1 - There’s Nothing I Can Do - Gloves, clear Perspex sheet. This piece represents the impossibility to act, and the transparency of the Perspex the invisibility of this force (it’s felt but not seen). Each hand will be trapped in a different position, one emphasizing the surprise upon death (capturing the wearer in a more stagnant state) and the second, the failed attempt to move (the hand will appear to be in the middle of a movement).

2 - Everything Looks Hopeless - Facemask, black metal mesh. The mask half-hiding the wearer from the outside world, and vise versa, symbolizes the distortion of reality after death. The wearer is still able to see the world, but now, divided in sections defined by the ugliness of the event that just took place.

3 - It Suffocates Me - Choker, black metal rod. The piece will symbolize the difficult continuation of living after the death event. It will be very tight around the wearer’s neck working as a reminder of what just took place and the energy involved in running the body. Despite being intensely involved in this emotional experience, there’s this reality (the body) that cannot be ignored and demands attention.

Entry - 26/09/09 - On Death

+ On Death - Concept Rational:

"This project is on the emotional consequences of death. I'm exploring the relationship between ugliness and beauty by looking at an ugly subject, death, and constructing beautiful objects that symbolize the effects created by it."

"(...) I wanted to focus on the purity of form, shape and composition. This intention was not driven by the concept underlying the project, but by my own need to explore unseen environments and the clarity and simplicity of the work by Marina Antoniou and Belinda Koopman."

- New Project!

+ The intention to have separate specials for both KNIFE / SPOON / FORK and Silvia has been changed. Due to very little time the decision has been made to show all of the work done during this year as a whole.

The respective special sould occur during the months of November and December.

+ As there is no stopping for the creative mind, or the academic obligation, the new project is well on its way! On Death aims at representing the consequences of the event of death on the witness. The work is composed of 3 pieces: There's Nothing I Can Do - hand gloves, Everything Looks So Hopeless - face mask, and It Suffocates Me - choker.

Further information on the project should follow in the upcoming weeks.

29/05/09 - More than a year ago!

+ Time goes by quicker than one expects! The last entry here written dates more than a year ago... What has happened since then? What didn't happen since then? What allowed for so much time to materialize between last entry's expectations and this one's?

+ On the 4th of June 2007 events took place that reshaped the future ahead! One of the consequences of those events was the move to Sydney, Australia of Joao Vaz. Another result was the highly unexpected return to academic studies, this time to do Jewellery and Object Design at TAFE Design Centre Enmore.

+ One project has already been finished under the fine roof of this institution. The project, entitled: KNIFE / SPOON / FORK, presents 3 pieces that sculpturally reinterpret the function and meaning of the respective utensils.

No more shall be said for the time being, only that the project's own page on the website is to appear soon. The pieces are currently in exhibition at the institution's critique room next to the Jewellery department.

+ Another project is now being undertaken. Silvia is born from a postcard, reconstruction and past inspirations.

The intention to record and analyze the creative process will for the first time take place progressively and intensively with this project. A web-blog has been created for this effect. Weekly updates on the progress of the piece will be provided until the conclusion of the work.

Once finished Silvia will also have its own page on the website with detailed information on the project and final piece.

- 32DFJ's web interface special

+ Greetings!! As written and promised here we are again to deliver the amazing and so awaited for special on the 32DFJ's web interface!

The idea for the maquette came directly from the source of creation! While still in the early stages of the collection, a narrative was imagined, somewhat as to connect and make sense of the pieces that will be part of it. Do not miss out on the photos and videos made specially for you_:)

"It opened up, and It fell and We with It! They were all/ whole around Us watching and touching. We lay. Forever".

__________________________________________________

- We are back!

32DFJ Maquette

+ And so, here we are again! The work force is backfrom its amazing, refreshing and brilliant holiday andprepared to bring to life all the exciting ideas of the creator of all!

+ The web interface for 32 Dead For Jewellery (working title) is under construction. As for all the previous projects/collections the visual web environment was always built upon 2D media the team has decided to explore new horizonsJ A maquette of the site serving as backdrop narrative for the collection was erected upon a magical and full of potential green garden table!

The final plan for the interface is to have videos of the maquette behind the pieces and during transitions. The shooting is due to start within the next few weeks!! DO NOT miss next entries! Sample videos will be shown ! ! !

- JoaoVaz & VAZ

+ VAZ embodies the spirit of all of Joao Vaz's projects up to the point of his jewellery course graduation in 2004, its existence is intricately connected with the conscient will to create and imagine beauty.

EMILYFrom the birth of JoaoVaz, VAZ’s path and motivations have become clearer and sharper.

+ The upcoming new collection is, as we write, under formulation, construction and development.

+ Also on its way is the editing of what begun as the presentation video for the new collection’s imaginary character, and grew to become on its own right a living creature “… self dependent, solitary, agoraphobic and suffering hallucination …”

+ JoaoVaz is the production label under which work is mass produced and available to a wider and younger audience.

Not Just A Body is the fisrt collection by the brand, and the first having all the work available online worldwide. The entire collection, neckpieces, brooches, bracelets and earrings were constructed using the same colour, materials and technique.
